NA2 rotator restrictions

  • Maximum unsupported weight on the port: 500 lbs.
  • Maximum rotational balance must be within 50 in-lbs
  • Maximum torque of the NA2 rotator: 70 ft-lbs
  • Maximum acceleration of the NA2 rotator: 10 degrees/second^2
  • Maximum moment about the rotator bearing: 1000 ft-lbs
  • Maximum rotator motion (cable wrap): +/- 360 degrees (+/- 270 is typical for most instruments)

Instrument restrictions

  • Removal of excess heat sources (> 50 watts) via tubing to Intermediate Level
  • Maximum size of instrument parts which can be craned to the observing level: 45" w x 84" l, maximum weight is 1 ton. You must provide your own attachement points for hooks or straps

  • Ensure your optics/chip location matches the port's nominal focus (8.251" from NA2 Mounting surface) is within +/- 0.5 inches.

  • Space is at a premium on the observing level. One persone must be able to maneveur the instrument and cart safely amoungst other instruments on the floor for mounting and unmounting to the telescope. Space between parked instruments typically is 6 - 8 feet at the largest to a foot at the closest. Having a cart that can support the weight as well as easily roll across an aluminum floor should be carefully considered.
