Each octopus cable connects 8 xyplex MX1620 terminal server ports to to a patch panel or 8-port harmonica with 6-wire 6-position RJ11 jacks. The patch panel or harmonica must be USOC-wired and have a male Telco connector, since this cable has a female Telco connector. This same wiring presumably works for all other xyplex terminal servers with RJ45 jacks.

If you wish to use hardware flow control then configure the xyplex for CTS/RTS handshaking.

Specifications

Each octopus consists of:

  • 8 RJ45 plugs, one per leg
  • 1 Female 50-pin Telco Connector

Each leg is four feet (4') long unless otherwise specified. The wiring is as follows. Use of twisted pair wire is optional, but if it is used, it must be used as shown in the table.

RJ-45 pins 2 and 7 must not be connected to anything. Telco pins 25 and 50 are also not connected.

Derivation

The octopus wiring is derived from the table below, as follows:

  • Columns 2 & 3 show the desired end result: the device to RJ11 wiring
  • Columns 3, 4, 5... show the standard USOC harmonica wiring (RJ11 to Telco USOC)
  • Comparing columns 2 against 5, 6... gives the resulting octopus wiring (device to Telco USOC)
